London, 1935. Working at the Crosse & Blackwell's food factory, Ruby Scully is trying hard to live a good life. She goes to church, puts food on the table for her younger brothers and turns a blind eye to her father's questionable money-making schemes. Her faith, and her mischievous best friend Ida, give her strength when the times get tough. But both are about to be tested when two very different men enter her life: one is a devout Christian, fervent in his faith and eager to recruit Ruby to his cause. The other is a Jewish campaigner for the Labour party, intent on changing the world. From 1930 to the eve of World War Two, Ruby Scully will face a terrible choice between duty and great love that will alter her future forever.
