Fond of the grand gesture, Hone Heke was the first to sign the Treaty of Waitangi - by pushing past many senior chiefs. When the economy of Northland was damaged by moving the capital from Russell to Auckland, Heke encouraged local discontent and brought about war between tribes across the area from Bay of Islands to Hokianga. There was considerable loss of life as a consequence and this book analyses the rebellion, the battles and their aftermath.
