Working class South London in the 1950's and Daisy Bacon, guardian of her cousin Lizzie have tragedy enter their lives. Daisy's mother is run over and killed outside their house and Daisy retreats into a world of silence. The once happy home becomes a prison, with Daisy's new stepmother Vera, as the cruel jailer. Yet it is Lizzie, a grown woman in body and appearance but has the innocent and trusting nature of a child that eventually brings sunshine back into Daisy's life. It is only when Henry Bacon discovers his new wife's shocking secret, that Daisy is free to find true happiness and in a way that she could never have anticipated.
It was dark, so dark in the locked cupboard under the stairs. Daisy scratched frenziedly at the rough wood, feeling her nails splintering. She wanted to scream for help, but couldn't make a sound. her cries came instead as frantic thoughts inside her head :Turn the light on! Oh please, turn the light on!
