On a mission to discover how fire is made, Māui visits his Aunty Mahuika. Each time he is given a flame he tells her he has lost it, until he eventually has lost all but one of her flames. In a rage she flings her last flame into a kaikomako tree. Māui takes a piece of hard mahoe wood and rubs it against a branch of the tree, bringing fire for eternity to his people. Suggested level: junior, primary.
